    Is Turkmenistan Safe to Visit?

Practical notes for travelers. For visa rules, see our visa page.

    Overall impression

Visitors we host usually say Turkmenistan feels calm and that street crime is uncommon. Treat that as a traveler impression, not a number. Stay with your group, listen to your guide, and use ordinary common sense with bags and cameras.

Travel with a licensed local guide

Most guests travel on a private trip with a licensed local guide and driver. That is how road travel, desert camps, and city days are arranged. See our tours page for the routes we run, or send an inquiry with your dates.

    Photography etiquette

Ask before you photograph people. Do not photograph government buildings, police, military sites, or airports. If you are unsure, ask your guide first.

    Passport

Carry your passport. You may need it at hotels and on the road. Keep a separate paper or digital copy in your bag.

    Money and cash

Bring clean US dollar notes. Cards are not widely accepted outside large hotels. Exchange money after you arrive at a bank, a licensed exchange, or your hotel. For more on notes and cards, see the currency guide.

Read the currency guide for how exchange works.

    Health

Drink bottled water. The desert sun is strong, so use a hat and sunscreen. Nights at camp can be cold even after a hot afternoon. Bring layers if you go to Darvaza.

Desert nights at the Darvaza Gas Crater are cold. Pack a layer even in summer.

    Road travel and the desert

City days use a car and driver. The last stretch to the crater is sandy and needs a 4x4. Stay in the vehicle unless your driver says otherwise, and keep a safe distance from the crater rim.

    Dress

Dress modestly at mosques and other religious sites. Shoulders and knees covered is the simple rule. Remove shoes when you enter a mosque or a home.

    Women travelers

Women travel the same private routes as other guests. Modest clothing at mosques is expected. A licensed guide handles day-to-day arrangements so you are not navigating the desert or city alone.
